Children’s Dentistry in Burwood
The development of a child’s teeth, airways, gums, and facial profile may be influenced by diet, breastfeeding, sleeping patterns, breathing technique, and poor dental habits. Baby teeth are the foundation for the correct alignment and development of adult teeth.
By instilling good oral hygiene habits when children are young, they’ll have the basis for better adult health. With regular dental visits, and early detection of possible complications, we can treat and prevent further issues.
Your Child’s First Visit
Going to the dentist for the first time as a child can be a strange experience. That’s why it’s important to make the experience as positive as possible to prevent the child from becoming anxious when they come to our practice.
On the first visit, we want your child to become familiar with their surroundings, the dentist and instruments, and the dental environment in general. We show them some props, get them to talk about themselves, and see what their teeth look like. There’s no actual treatment on the first visit, it’s all about how they’re coping with being in our space. If your child has a lot of decayed teeth, a treatment plan will be created to address the problems.
Child Dental Benefits Schedule
At Burwood Dental Centre, we are pleased to treat families eligible for the CDBS.
- If your child is under the age of 18, they may qualify for the government’s Dental Benefits Scheme. The Child Dental Benefits Schedule (CDBS) is a dental program designed to provide assistance for eligible children between the ages of 2 to 17years.
- The CDBS provides coverage of up to $1,000 over a two-year period for basic dental services, including examinations, X‐rays, cleaning, fissure sealing, fillings, and extractions.
- We have specifically trained and experienced dentists to care for the oral health of children with complex dental needs. We cater to your child’s needs and make their visits at the dental clinic very comfortable and wonderful.
- We have various methods to help your child feel relaxed and at peace, both mentally and physically. These include explaining the procedures on their level, in terms easily understood by children, creating a positive environment with colourful pictures, playing their favourite videos or light soothing music, and rewarding them for their cooperation to encourage regular visits.
Dental Treatments for Children
We offer several special procedures to promote healthy teeth in children, including
Saving space for permanent teeth: As milk teeth fall off, the new erupting teeth are bigger in size and need more space to accommodate the developing jaws. If milk teeth are lost before the correct time, it may lead to crowded adult teeth. In some cases, it may even delay the formation of permanent teeth, due to bone development in the area where the milk tooth used to be. It may be necessary to maintain space for the erupting permanent teeth using early interventions like space maintainers.
Fissure Sealants: Sealants are a preventive varnish-like filling material applied to children’s teeth to prevent decay from developing in the deep grooves of the back molars. These grooves can be deep and narrow, making them difficult to clean effectively, even with a child’s toothbrush. For susceptible teeth, our dentists regularly use fissure sealants to protect and strengthen those teeth. It’s a white filling material that flows into the cleaned grooves of a child’s molar teeth. After filling these areas, children can clean their teeth more effectively and prevent further damage to teeth. This is a very simple and painless preventative measure routinely used for children, and takes only a few minutes to apply.
Orthodontic treatment: The first of a child’s adult teeth typically appear around the ages of 9 or 10. This is also when some developmental problems of the teeth and/or jaws may require attention.
The conditions we usually look for and treat in early childhood are tooth eruption, crossbites, severe overcrowding, jaw growth problems, snoring, and thumb sucking. Early visits may prevent future orthodontic treatment, or may shorten and simplify later treatment.
